Bawumia Pledges Annual Constituency Engagements to Strengthen Grassroots Link

Ex Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has declared that, should he be elected president, he intends to conduct a single official engagement annually in each of Ghana's 275 constituencies. He posits that these engagements will facilitate direct communication between the presidency and citizens, traditional leaders, opinion moulders, and local stakeholders, thereby mitigating reliance on intermediary channels.

Dr. Bawumia contends that this initiative will foster a more robust connection between the government and communities, thereby enabling the monitoring of development promise implementation and the prompt resolution of challenges. This commitment also serves to position him as a leader who prioritizes accessibility, transparency, and the incorporation of feedback from the grassroots.

Certain analysts interpret this proposal as a strategic manoeuvre designed to address criticisms concerning the current administration's perceived detachment from ordinary citizens. Others characterize it as an endeavour to galvanize the New Patriotic Party (NPP) base and to differentiate his leadership approach from that of President Akufo-Addo.

Nonetheless, concerns persist regarding the practical viability of this plan. The undertaking of visiting all 275 constituencies would necessitate approximately 23–24 official events per month, coupled with substantial security and logistical resources. Critics opine that in the absence of a robust follow-up mechanism, these engagements may devolve into ceremonial affairs rather than substantive interventions.

The successful execution of this initiative holds the potential to enhance accountability and public confidence. Conversely, its failure to achieve substantive outcomes risks the generation of unmet expectations.
